Hello! Welcome to the eBuddy blog. Here we talk about our passion, the team and our products.

eBuddy update: now in the Android Market

Posted by Ivar on October 9th, 2009

Hi!

This week we released a whole new version (1.3) of eBuddy for Android in the Market. Here’s what we changed:

eBuddy for Android login screen (with auto-login)

  • - Faster & secure login: Login now takes you to your buddy list much faster :-) . Plus, it’s even more secure than before.
  • - Auto-login: Not only the login speed and security is improved, but you can also choose to automatically login when you start eBuddy.
  • - Typing indicator: You can now see when your buddy is typing a message, right from the chat screen.
  • - Back-key improvements: We added some new ways of navigating the app with the back-key. For instance: you can now exit from the login screen using the back-key.

We’re already seeing some really great comments from you guys about this new version in the Android Market. For example:

“Fantastic application would recommend highly!!
Terpischore @ 2009-10-08 – 5 stars

“Best all in one now since i can back out of the app 5*s
mstee @ 2009-10-08 – 5 stars

Thanks for those kind words :-D !

If you have an Android device, such as the HTC Magic, T-Mobile G1, or the HTC Hero, you can already download eBuddy for Android from the Market or directly with your barcode scanner:

Enjoy!

This program works great! One thing that would be a great new feature would be the ability to log on ‘invisible’. It’d be fantastic to be able to do that for when you just want to check messages quickly, without a bunch of folks all wanting to chat. :)

SUGGESTION - Instead of having to go to the menu to close conversations (3 steps: click into convo, click menu, click close conversation), we should be able to long press to have a dialogue box pop up asking us to close (with a do not ask again checkbox so we can just close a convo with one long press (1 step!!!). :-)

FIX FIX FIX When I add my facebook account it is listing my .edu address as invalid. After testing, it is listing ANY email address as invalid and not adding facebook to the buddy list. Please fix.

I just purchased a new HTC Hero in Canada (TELUS) and eBuddy cannot be found in the Android Market.

  32. son Says: November 14th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

got an htc hero… its great, but the font is toooooo small, there’s no option for fonts in settings… its very inconvenient, but the thing is i’m stuck with it as ebuddy happens to be the best im app in terms of reliability/stability….

2ndly, wish i could add a name to the im ids, so the names are displayed instead of the ids… as you know, people dont always use their names as id (many cases ids are completely different from names) … so if the names are displayed instead of the im ids, i know who they are… of course ideally, this app could link to the contact dbase, so when ebuddy detects a contact with an im/email id and this contact is already in the friends’s list, then it pulls and displayes the name instead of the id…

  33. Michael Says: November 16th, 2009 at 10:30 am

  35. tom Says: November 18th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

It would be great if it supports invisible login.

  36. Michael Says: November 20th, 2009 at 10:12 am

any new ver? can set the font size?

  37. Andrew Says: November 25th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Great app! It’s much, much better than any other IM app available for android.

It would be nice to have the option of connecting to arbitrary Jabber/XMPP servers. eBuddy must already have XMPP support since it supports gTalk, so it wouldn’t be hard to add a Jabber account type which lets you specify a server other than talk.google.com.

  38. Simon Says: December 1st, 2009 at 4:12 am

    Good work. Thanks.

I would also like to vote for additonal Jabber/XMPP account support + the ability the be invisible would be nice.

  39. Azim Says: December 2nd, 2009 at 8:18 am

I cannot for some reason change my display name from ‘ng’. I can change it while in logged in but when and if I log off and log in again, it reverts back to ‘ng’!
I even tried to sign up on a different account and it does the same damn thing!
    Any ideas or suggestions?

  40. James Says: December 11th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

I am using the new Motorola milestone and i am having connection issues when i use your e buddy application.

Although i am unsure if the problem lies with the firmware.

But i get no connection drops when i am using the browser on the phone.

  41. Hallow Says: December 19th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Finally, names showing up for ICQ contacts integrated with AIM rather than numbers. Yay! BUT….

It constantly appears to be logging me off. Every time I switch back to it from another app, it has to log me back in.

If it can’t keep me logged in, and receiving messages, it’s not of much use. :(

  42. Vion Says: December 29th, 2009 at 5:17 pm

I can’t seem to change my MSN display name. whenever i restart ebuddy, it goes back to the same old nick again. Is it just me or what? Using HTC Dream

  43. Craig Says: December 30th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Also would like the sign in as invisible feature, and an option to have the messages displayed more like the android messaging app. Talk bubbles are neat and all, but would rather have the space used for a bigger font. Seems a waste to have to use such small type just to have silly little cartoon speech bubbles.

And I also have the problem of it signing back in every time i leave the app and come back. Even if only out of it for 5 seconds. Then I get all of my messages 2 or 3 times. This makes the app nearly useless, and I really WANT to use it and like it.

  44. Matthew Manuel Says: January 7th, 2010 at 11:40 am

Yet another request/vote for specifiying the XMPP/Jabber server to connect to! :)

Also, in FB Chat it doesn’t indicate if the contacts are idle or typing… would be nice to have that functionality.

    Great app! Thanks!

  45. muimui Says: January 12th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

I found the display name disappeared when I login eBuddy again. I was thinking where did HTC hero store the old name?

Also, I don’t like the “bubbles” as well, simple line spacing is good enough.

Where’s the Jabber support? I see GTalk, which uses Jabber, but not Jabber itself.

i downloaded v1.5 to my htc hero recently and it seems to be full of bugs. i’m never online on other people’s contacts, i lose connection constantly (could be my phone) and things just dont get updated regulaly.

are there people experiencing the same problem? can someone please help?

  50. Tony Says: March 5th, 2010 at 5:30 pm

Facebook chat very problematic.. i can send messages reliably but the recipient cannot reply. I’ve logged out/in countless times, deleted the FB account and then added it again with nothing improving the performance.

eBuddy reports who is online reliably but their messages are only intermittently coming thru, maybe 1 in 20, often nothing at all other than the first one. The FB page on the PC reports me as online if a message is recieved from me but as soon as that person replies, the chat box reports that i’m not there anymore..

my device is an HTC Hero on Vodafone UK and these tests were done with almost full 3G/HSDPA signal. the FB environment is reliable on the PC with all chat functions operating cleanly to other PC clients.

hope you can fix this… if you can prove its rock solid, i would pay for the App….

I can’t believe no 1 asked for this in the comments. I would like to be able to have group chat with this app like the Iphone app has. Most of my friends have the iPhone. So it would be nice to group chat not only thru droid phones but cross platform as well. IPhone had this in there app would be nice to have it on the droid and other smart phones as well. Btw I own the HTC Eris. Thanks

  55. Adlina Says: July 10th, 2010 at 7:42 am

I love ebuddy, been using it for quite a while and honestly it’s an amazing app but i’d appreciate it if you’d develop ebuddy for windows mobile.

  56. Mark Tudor Says: July 10th, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Another request for generic Jabber support. My company uses OpenFire which is a Jabber chat server. Any chance of an official word on this?

Also, auto start on the android app would be a bonus.

  57. FiX Says: July 11th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Jabber and delivery acknowledgement would be nice.

  58. Opiekelly Says: July 19th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
