Hello! Welcome to the eBuddy blog. Here we talk about our passion, the team and our products.

New update for eBuddy on iPhone & iPod Touch

Posted by Ivar on July 22nd, 2009

Hi iPhone & iPod Touch users!

Since we launched our app we’ve gotten a lot of feedback. We highly appreciate all your input and take it very seriously. We want you to have the best, reliable, instant messaging experience on your iPhone. With your help we found a few issues and have been able to fix them, thanks for all your input!

A new update is now available in the App Store with the following improvements:

  • - Fixed issues with special characters: In certain languages with special characters (such as an ‘é’ or Chinese symbols) these were displayed as a question mark. Special characters should now appear correctly.
  • - Setting for Recent Chats: We added a setting so you can now choose whether or not you want to show the Recent Chats group in your buddy list.
  • - Setting for Shake-to-Buzz: You can now choose whether or not a buzzer is sent when you shake your phone in a chat.
  • - Show blocked buddies as offline: Blocked buddies were shown as online, sometimes cluttering up your buddy list. But now they’re shown as offline, so you can make them go away by hiding offline buddies in Settings :-)
  • - Fixed an issue with push notifications: In certain special cases push notifications (those alerts for messages after you leave the app) didn’t arrive on your phone, but we made some changes so this shouldn’t happen anymore.
  • - New network icons: The network icons for MSN, Yahoo, Facebook, etc. have been improved; a bit of eye-candy so eBuddy looks even more pretty ;-)
  • - Minor bug fixes

We hope this update makes your chat experience with eBuddy even better. A new major update is coming soon, so keep an eye on the App Store!

Btw, if you don’t have our iPhone app yet: eBuddy is available as a free download in the Apple App Store now.

Get eBuddy in the App Store

As always: Enjoy messaging everyone, everywhere on your iPhone and iPod Touch :-) !

    Great update!
The maximum of time that push notification works is limited to 30 minutes. Isn’t it possible to make this indefinitely. Becuase I really would like to stay ‘online’

  2. s d Says: July 22nd, 2009 at 9:45 pm

    Thanks.
But indeed, why a limit to 30 minutes??? It is not even the time I need to drive back home! I would like to have a 1 hour, 3 hours, 1 day, 3 days option.
And here are other things that should be improved about push:
    - if eBuddy is not in foreground (but within the push notification range), I am set as offline for my friends!
    - the notification messages should give the beginning of the message not just “X sent you a message”
    - chat history is really missing! Imagine you are beginning a chat, then quit the app. Your contact answers, so you get back (thanks to push notification if it is within 30 minutes), and you see the answer, not your initial question :(

  3. s d Says: July 22nd, 2009 at 10:25 pm

I’d like to add that “IM+” lets choose a push duration to 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 1 day, and even 3 days. Because 30 minutes is way too short…

    iPhone App.

Wonderful app. I love the fact that it does almost exactly what I need and it doesn’t cost a single penny. A lot of people are complaining about the time intervals. I must be honest, 30min is just about perfect for what I need. If those people need to be connected for extra “days”, then they should just go buy IM+ or something or seek professional help.

Secondly, I wanted to point out to most of the haters, this is FREE. Push notifications require a server-side action that eBuddy is generous enough to give to us without charging us for an iPhone app. When you all consider paying for this service, they might up the time for push notifications to be active.

Gripes. Like most people, I do have a few gripes, but even if they never got fixed, I’d be okay with that. I’d like to be able to rename people (alias feature) and I’d love to be able to combine people (1 visible contact for the same person who’s logged into MSN, AIM, & Facebook at the same time).

But finally, it is a great app, and I couldn’t ask more from a free app that I’m so pleased with. Thank you for the great work and keep it up!

  27. joel Says: August 18th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

excuseme i just download the v 3.1 and i was scared of it because it dont work very good….the first time is amazing is very cool…but after when you are out the app it dont work …you try to enter and have a chat it only dont enter …please fix it! im very sad for this

  28. jerry Says: August 19th, 2009 at 12:09 am

This push is great but a 30 minute limit makes it unreliable. It doen’t make since to have to start the app every 30 minutes. Please fix this. A always on option would be the solution.

  29. jwo Says: August 19th, 2009 at 5:28 am

nice update, looks nicer but ever sense i got the update it will crash about every 10 mins or so!!! plese fix this, and plese add myspace im to it!!! thanks!

I want my MSN name to show as my MSN name. Until eBuddy does that, I’m going back to Fring.

  31. bryan Says: August 19th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

i would like to see an update where the app stays connected longer.. atleast an hr? 5… 10.. even 30 min is too short.. cus the loading time kinda takes forever..

  32. Andy Says: August 19th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

I love it before the updated, now it crashes at startup!

  33. Asaad Says: August 20th, 2009 at 9:20 am

Hi i am not able to activate the push? i have in settings: sound, vibrate, badge, and in ebuddy set to 30 min but i don’t get any notifications when i exit or anything, but when in reenter the application it rings and vibrates showing 3 new chats for example.
is it normal or i should see a number near the icon like the missed calles or new sms?
    and why not ringing?
i’m using iphone 3G on the 3.0 software.

    Great app.
A few things I’d suggest however are mainly with display pictures. It would be nice to have our own display pictures as well as be able to see the display pictures of others. aside from that, the app is wonderful so far.

  37. Ivar Says: August 21st, 2009 at 8:39 am

@joel @jwo @Andy @Kez: We found an issue in the 3.1.0 version of our iPhone app which may cause your app to crash on startup. Yesterday an update was released to fix this, please install this update and let us know if it doesn’t work for you.

You can read our other blog post for more info: http://blog.ebuddy.com/index.php/ebuddy-blog/bug-in-ebuddy-for-iphone-310/

  38. ykfang Says: August 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 am

30-minute-limit for push is the biggest issue for this application. I won’t use unless it’s extended to 12 hours or more.

  39. Ribka Says: September 11th, 2009 at 4:14 am

I still can’t get the push notifications..
It is always mentioned when I’m signing in “connect to the itunes to use the push notification”.
Also the ’stay online after exitting’ does not work too on my iphone.. What should I do?

  40. Ivar Says: September 11th, 2009 at 8:39 am

@Ribka You need to have OS version 3.0 or higher installed on your iPhone, did you do that already? Sometimes push notifications don’t work well with jailbroken iPhones either.

Please send an e-mail to feedback_iphone@ebuddy.com if you need more help.

  41. speedy Says: September 13th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Is it possible to see when your BLOCKED buddies are ONLINE? I keep many blocked because I want to select who can see me and who can’t - so I block and unblock as needed.

Can you please respond to the 30 minute push notification comments? It seems no one is taking that request into consideration.

    Thanks.

  45. Simon Says: September 27th, 2009 at 5:02 am

I have a problem with eBuddy for my iPhone.

When I talk to my contacts with my iPhone, the notification for my contacts to show that I am typing does not stop when I stop typing. So, it almost constantly says “Simon is typing…”

I really want to have this fixed and it would be great if someone could offer a remedy for this. Thanks.

  46. Mike Says: September 28th, 2009 at 11:32 am

I installed ebuddy on my ipod touch, and it worked fine for about three days, but now when I open it, it closes instantly. I can’t uninstall, or reinstall ebuddy.

  47. Ivar Says: September 28th, 2009 at 2:04 pm

@h2o: We take these request in consideration as well, soon we will have an update for you.

  48. Ivar Says: September 28th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

@Simon: This is a known issue with some networks which we’re working on at the moment. We hope to have a fix for it soon.

  49. Ivar Says: September 28th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

@Mike: The only thing I can recommend is to reinstall eBuddy. I hope this works. If not, maybe you could try to contact Apple about uninstalling the app?

  50. Mehul Says: September 30th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

I have noticed that eBuddy will not sign me into any of my accounts if the password to that account has a special character. I’ve tried with both GTalk and MSN. Once I changed the password to my MSN account and removed the special character (&), I was able to login using eBuddy without any issues. Can this be addressed as I constantly use special characters in my passwords to add complexity.

  51. Ivar Says: October 1st, 2009 at 10:14 am

@Mehul Which version of the application are you using? Our latest version 3.1.1 should not have this problem, but if you do have it, please send an e-mail to feedback_iphone@ebuddy.com with your account details.

  58. ngszehin Says: October 28th, 2009 at 11:34 am

    @Ivar

Just want you to know that I am very much willing to pay up to $9.99 to get the “ebuddy premium” or “ebuddy +” if you give me 3~5 days push.

I have been using m.ebuddy.com and the new ebuddy beta (today). On iPhone, I am forced to purchase Beejive and IM+ (because long time push is just the basic requirement for me), and none of them are as fast as ebuddy. Perhaps because lots of things (multi-account connectivity, for example?) are being done on the server side for ebuddy? And I appreciate that.

I am sure there would be lots of people would would be tempted to pay for the paid version of ebuddy once you release it because of the great performance over the competitors. I don’t mind to make you rich, as long as you could offer the great product.

And one thing, I like ebuddy is without the picture. It drag the speed a lot (for beejive and IM+).

Of course, I expect that the performance remains unchanged (or even better) for the premium version with the longer push. Hope that the “long push” is not a performance obstacle. (I guess it is only a resources / marketing / critical mass issue, right?)

    Awaiting for it.

    Cheers.

Same here, my personal guess is the logs fill up and it get’s to heavy for the IPod’s internal memory to load.

    I have to re-install Ebuddy 2 times a day =(

I understand sometimes things go wrong, but I would like to know whether I need to look for a new messenger or it will be fixed.

I got no idea how many people got this problem, but I got a standard IPod so I doubt it’s just us few..

  73. Ivar Says: November 11th, 2009 at 11:31 am

@All If you have any problems at startup: we’re currently working on a release with fixes for these issues. In the meantime a possible solution is to close chats which have a lot of messages, or to disable automatic login.

  74. Miniscotch Says: November 11th, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Thanx alot Ivar trying tht now

  75. Chisel Wright Says: November 19th, 2009 at 12:48 am

I find that I can chat with one or two people for a while. Then some tipping point is hit, and ebuddy (iPhone) crashes out back to the iPhone “desktop”.

Only solution I’ve found so far is delete the app, losing settings and messages that I received by push, then reinstall the app.

  76. Andrea Says: November 19th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
