Hello! Welcome to the eBuddy blog. Here we talk about our passion, the team and our products.

Lite Messenger: a new release

Posted by Ivar on July 31st, 2008

Hi there!

Have you ever had the experience of working on something you’re really passionate about and love? Well, a few months ago I was given the challenge of working on “the best mobile chat experience on Earth” (that’s eBuddy, in case you’re wondering ;-) ), and the short story is… I’m loving it :-D ! I’m mostly involved with our new-and-improved Lite Messenger. Yes, you read it correctly… we have just made the Lite Messenger (the one you can use straight from your phone’s browser (m.ebuddy.com) even better!

So, you’re saying to yourself, “Seriously, what’s really new?” Well, hang on to your hat; we’ve worked on quite a lot of cool new things to make your adventures with eBuddy even more fun and easy-to-use:

Contact list sorting

“So many friends… so little time.” So, if you have a lot of friends on your list, you can now select the following settings to improve browsing through that huge buddy list of yours:
Settings for contacts

  • Choose the total number of contacts to show per page in your buddy list: 20, 100 or all.
  • Sort your buddies by account (e.g. MSN and Yahoo).
  • Sort your buddies by the groups that you made yourself (e.g. ‘Family’ and ‘Friends’).
  • Sort your buddies by name.
  • Contact list search

We’ve also made it easier to find your friends quickly. There’s now a search link on top of your buddy list that you can use to search your entire list. For instance, go to the search, type in ‘foo’ and hit search – all buddies that have ‘foo’ in their name are listed, and you can chat with one or all of them.

    Search for contacts flow

    Message time stamps

For all you curious types: Now you can see what time each message is sent and received in your chat screen. Simply go to the settings screen, enable it, select your time zone (e.g. ‘GMT+0100’ for Amsterdam), and you’re good to go! Don’t know your time zone? Look it up here: www.worldtimezone.com.

    Active chat on top

The buddies that you’re chatting with are now always at the top of your buddy list, so you can quickly go back to chatting with them even if you step away for a moment.

    Did-you-know?

Screenshot Lite Messenger Did-You-Know-notifications… there are now notifications during log-in?

We want you to have the smoothest, best chat experience possible, so we’re now serving up tips and tricks for you after log-in.

    iPhone

Using the Lite Messenger on the iPhone? We now have a pretty slick iPhone version (or at least we think so :-D ), which is already discussed in a previous blog post.

Haven’t tried using the Lite Messenger on your mobile phone? Well “Carpe Diem (Seize the Day!)” because there’s no time like the present! Simply type m.ebuddy.com into your phone’s mobile browser and you’re good to go. Don’t forget to bookmark it!

We hope you like what we’ve done. So check it out, and don’t forget, feedback is always welcome and appreciated! You can share your thoughts on what we should add next by clicking on “Please let us know what you think”, after logging out on the Lite Messenger.

    Happy messaging :-D !

Yes, but the pop-up feature (the one that pop-up incoming messages) is still missing… removed, actually, because was present before.

    2. Ivar Says: August 1st, 2008 at 8:23 am

@Andrea - I don’t think there ever was a pop-up for new messages in the Lite Messenger (which is a slim version for mobile phones). If you have any suggestions please e-mail them to feedback@ebuddy.com.

    3. Andrea Says: August 1st, 2008 at 12:37 pm

      Pardon, you’re right :)
I was a bit confused, due to the frustration of this missing feature on the normal client.

No, I will not send again the e-mail to the feedback address, because I already did in the past, and doesn’t seems that worked to have back that feature.

Sorry again for having post an off topic comment.

the title of the conversation up there like.. passing away…

      xD anyways i love it

@Andrea Sorry, not every feature request makes it (to the top of the list), but we do appreciate any feedback. Anyway, I’ve passed your request on to the Web guys, but sending an e-mail to the feedback address may draw their attention some more ;-).

Not all my contacts show up on my list even when I have it set to show offline contacts…I’ve even had one online while talking to him on the phone, but his name still didn’t show up on my list…any reason why that would be?

    22. Ivar Says: September 4th, 2008 at 8:22 am

@Jen I don’t know right now what may be wrong, but of course you should be able to talk to all your buddies! Could you send an e-mail with a little more details (which network you’re using, username, etc.) to the feedback address, so we can take a look at this? Thanks!

@cherry For using eBuddy Lite Messenger in your phone’s browser you need to have Internet settings from your network operator. You can generally find these on their website or get the settings by calling their helpdesk.

Good call man, I have the instinct too and I cant wait to use ebuddy. I check all the time to see if ebuddy has come out with a version that supports the instinct keyboard yet and I am dissapointed every time I check. Is a version of ebuddy thats compatible with the instinct on its way soon? please let us know.

    40. Ivar Says: December 22nd, 2008 at 4:58 pm

@Nick @Andre @Billy J. @Sammy @Rob We’ve been looking at supporting eBuddy Mobile for the Samsung Instinct, but unfortunately I cannot give you an answer when we’ll be able to release a version that is compatible. You should be able to use the Lite Messenger in your phone’s browser though: http://m.ebuddy.com

I’ve had an issue with the Hide Offline’s feature in both the lite version & the Mobile Version on my HTC Touch Pro (the Touch Diamond d/l works for the Touch Pro only with the Jbed MIDlet Manager btw - i’ve tested all the other midlet managers & they do not seem to work with ebuddy mobile on the HTC)

anyway, i choose hide offline contacts in the settings on both the lite version & the mobile version yet i can still see over 100 offline conacts in my list. This seems to affect Yahoo only however. Is this a known bug & is it being worked on? I will provide more details to developers only. please advise.

** i also wanted to add that i also have the same issue using ebuddy on my pc & laptop.. offline contacts show up on yahoo even tho i have the Hide Offline Contacts checked..

    43. Ivar Says: January 6th, 2009 at 10:53 am

@Vampryss Thanks for your message. Our developers have looked at your offline contacts issue and couldn’t reproduce it unfortunately. Are you by any chance looking at the ‘recent chats’ group, which also shows buddies if they’re offline? Please send us an e-mail at feedback@ebuddy.com, thanks.

    44. Vampryss Says: January 7th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Ivar - its not the recent chats group - most of the contacts that show up i havent talked with in over a year yet there they are, on the list & offline - i’ve sent a short video of the application with 143 out of 183 contacts - only 9 are actually online out of the 143 in the list - the video shows where i’ve deselected Hide offlines & new offline contacts show up - then reselect Hide offline contacts & the first couple in the list disappear again - hope this helps some how.
